Wayne Rooney has told Sky Sports that he believes Manchester United are two players away from challenging for the title.
The Red Devils finished fourth this season,
securing an immediate return to the Champions League, but were 17 points behind champions Chelsea.
But Rooney believes they can close that gap next season with one or two quality additions over the summer.
United appear to have missed out on signing Sami Khedira who is set to have a medical ahead of a move to Juventus.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Khedira is in Turin to complete his move to the Italian champions.
Khedira will leave Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, alerting several Premier League clubs but will reportedly sign a four-year deal worth £2.6m-a-season plus bonuses with Juventus.
The Argentine’s agent said yesterday that his client would do whatever it takes to force through a summer move.
But Valencia president Amadeo Salvo insists the centre-back will not be leaving on the cheap.
United are eyeing up a £40m move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, according to the Guardian.
Louis van Gaal is looking for a replacement for Radamel Falcao, who has returned to Monaco after a disappointing loan spell.
And the Red Devils could offer David De Gea as a possible makeweight in any deal, with the Spaniard Real’s top summer target.
